Student Work:

Drawing Fundamentals

Good drawing skills are an important foundation for any artist.  When students approach me for drawing lessons, our starting point depends on the age and skill level of the student.  For teen and adult students, an understanding of basic shapes in 3 dimensions is a vital starting point.  From there, we practice drawing from observation, gesture drawing, how to 'truly see' and record visual information with the pencil, and eventually moving into more advanced subject matter like portraiture, or combining references using our creativity to create unique compositions and scenes.  Lessons and drawing subject matter are custom tailored to what inspires each student, to move them in the direction of their joyful creative self expression.

Acrylic Painting

Acrylic paints present a unique set of strengths and challenges.  I love working with acrylics, and can share a variety of methods and approaches with my students.  How to build an image in layers while thinking a few steps ahead, creating textures and depth, colour theory, and using mediums and glazes to take our work to the next level are all examples of things I share with students.  Proper use and care of materials are another one of my passions when it comes to painting.  If students don't already have a strong foundation in drawing, I recommend cultivating that before moving into 1:1 painting lessons.  I love to explore what excites my students and help them to create just that, to move them in the direction of their joyful creative self expression.

Watercolour Painting

Watercolour painting is a truly beautiful artistic medium.  I love to create images with vibrant colour and high detail in watercolours, incorporating waterproof pens and lots of fine line work and areas of sharp focus, combined with light colour washes and areas of softness.  Working in layers is vital.

Oil Painting

Oil paints are creamy, rich, and slow to dry.  Like all painting mediums, they have many advantages and disadvantages.  Oil painting is my favourite painting medium.  Blending, high detail, soft edges, working in layers, and glazing are just a few of the techniques and methods I share with my students.

Creativity & Imagination

Aside from technical knowledge, creativity and imagination are fundamental to being an artist.  I can share exercises to explore your creativity and imagination, working 1:1 with you to help unearth and discover what is unique about your creative self expression.  Not only do we want to create beautiful art that is technically 'good', but we want to honour ourselves by being authentic and making art that is an expression of our spirit.
